The value of the Jobs Package

The Jobs Package event was a several step process where the students found a job posting they were interested in, tailored a cover letter & resume to the specific job, completed a mock phone interview, and finally a closing a session where a face to face mock interview took place. In the final face to face interview session, each student was interviewed by a panel for the specific job posting. The panel interviewing each student was led by a faculty member or a professional from industry. After the interview the student also acted as an interviewer as well with specific list of questions that may be asked as a primer for our own questions. This process has been a mainstay of professionalism from my ICC experience throughout my IRE experience. It was a way to gain confidence through the practice of a necessary skill and had profound impact on the students as they make their way throughout their school experience. I feel that the largest impact that this process made on me was that it give me a process in which to systematically answer questions through stories. I have found that answering with stories breeds more discussion, often shows the character of yourself to the hiring committee, and above all it gives you more chances to cause a personal question with someone on the hiring panel. In the past I have used these skills in several interviews as well as several discussions that have led to job offers for the future and an internship. Ways that I may use this in the future are through applying the process of answering questions with stories and having the pre-disposition to prepare answers to questions that will likely be asked for interviews, discussions, and building relationships with industry personal. These are great skills to remember for current students seeking summer internships and graduating seniors apply for full time employment.
