On April 10th Iron Range Engineering in collaboration with The College of St. Scholastica hosted an engineering/computer science day for local high school students. Upon arrival in the morning, the students were split into three groups. One group's task was to design and construct a marble roller coaster system using only pipe insulation, duct tape, and wooden lathe. Another group was making a water purification system, using cotton balls, sand, and gravel to turn colored water back to clear. The third group was learning how to build apps that could be used in every day life. Iron Range Engineering provided the students with lunch and the opportunity to talk with the current engineering students. This allowed the high school students an opportunity to ask questions about college, engineering and a variety of other topics. After lunch the students got together in the seminar room and got to ask questions to a panel of engineers and computer science gradates. After the panel discussion they were split up into two more groups. One group went with the IRE program director to discuss engineering and the other stayed in the seminar room to discuss the computer science program at St. Scholastica. At the end of the day prizes were given to the students with the best app, filter, and roller coaster.
