On May 2nd and
3rd, the smart saw team had the opportunity to take part in the
Minnesota Inventors Congress Invention Expo. The team used their presentation
skills gained at Iron Range Engineering to describe their digital transmitting
tape measure and automated miter saw stop called Sure Cut to possible
investors, fellow inventors, and the public. Not only was the team able to
pitch their idea from their booth, but also to a live news crew and to a panel
of experts who gave feedback on the design.
The expo also included workshops
essential to inventors, such as licensing and filing for patents. Overall, the
experience was very successful as an opportunity to learn about the design
process as it applies to entrepreneurs and inventors. The design, the team, and
Iron Range Engineering’s learning model captured a lot of attention. The team
was able to return with a gold medal for their design, youngest inventor award,
and the Professor Otto Schmitt Memorial Award for most creative, innovative or
unusual invention.
